The National Electricity Market Operator – MEMO LLC, has finalized the implementation of the auction trading system for Guarantees of Origin (GOs) for electricity, following a month-long preparation process.

With the introduction of auction trading, MEMO is fulfilling the steps envisaged under the Reform Agenda related to the establishment of a trading system for Guarantees of Origin, as part of the process of aligning with European practices and developing the country’s green energy market.

Auction trading represents a logical next step in the development of this market, with the primary objective of ensuring greater transparency and market-based price formation for Guarantees of Origin. Rather than having their value determined through limited or bilateral arrangements, the auction mechanism will allow supply and demand to directly influence price formation.

This model creates new opportunities for renewable electricity producers by enabling them to generate additional value from the green attributes of the electricity they produce. A Guarantee of Origin certifies that a specific quantity of electricity has been generated from a renewable energy source, and as the market develops, this certificate is gaining increasing economic value.

At the same time, auctions will provide suppliers and companies with a clearer, more transparent, and competitive way to procure these certificates. This is particularly important for companies operating in European markets, where requirements related to decarbonization, sustainable business practices, and carbon footprint reduction are becoming increasingly significant.

The introduction of auction trading is not merely a new trading instrument, but also an important step towards establishing a modern and functional green energy market in North Macedonia. Growing interest in this segment is reflected in the fact that more than 850.000 Guarantees of Origin have been issued since April 2025.

By establishing the auction trading system, MEMO is creating the conditions for further market development, greater transparency in trading and more effective connections between green energy producers and companies seeking to verify the origin of the electricity they consume.
