22 September 2026 – Vienna – Representatives of the National Electricity Market Operator – MEMO LLC, led by the CEO, Zoran Gjorgjievski, are participating in the 21st Energy Community Gas Forum, under the auspices of the European Commission.
The Forum brings together representatives of European and regional institutions, regulatory authorities, system operators and market participants to exchange experiences and discuss current challenges and the future development of European and regional natural gas markets.
The Forum’s programme covers topics related to the future of the European gas network, developments in the European gas market, the impact of current geopolitical developments on natural gas supply, gas market integration, the implementation of network codes, as well as the development of cross-border gas infrastructure and opportunities for natural gas trading.
Particular attention is being paid to the integration of natural gas markets and the development of cross-border trade, which is of particular importance for the countries of the region and their process of integration into the European energy market.
MEMO’s participation in the Forum provides an opportunity to exchange experiences and gain further insight into European and regional models for the organisation and functioning of natural gas markets. This is particularly relevant in the context of the Government’s decision assigning MEMO responsibility for establishing the natural gas market in the country. MEMO is expected to prepare and submit a comprehensive plan covering the organisational, technical, IT, legislative and financial aspects necessary for establishing and operating the new market function.
The legal framework for the organisation and management of the natural gas market as a regulated energy activity of public interest was established by the Energy Law in 2018. In the meantime, with the establishment of MEMO, an operational electricity market has been successfully established, enabling the company to develop experience and capacities in the organisation and management of energy markets. In determining the model for establishing the natural gas market operator, various European and regional experiences were considered, ranging from fully liberalised systems to hybrid models. The analyses showed that establishing a new, separate entity would require a longer implementation period, as well as additional administrative and operational resources.
MEMO already has a functional IT platform, a market settlement system and institutional experience in managing energy markets. The assumption of responsibilities related to the natural gas market would enable the use of existing capacities and the development of an integrated model for operating the electricity and natural gas markets.
The participation of MEMO representatives at the 21st Energy Community Gas Forum provides an opportunity to follow the latest European and regional practices, exchange experiences with relevant institutions and operators, and gain insight into the technical, regulatory and market aspects relevant to the forthcoming process of establishing the natural gas market in North Macedonia.
