At the Government session held on June 5, 2025, the National Electricity Market Operator (MEMO) was appointed as the Nominated Electricity Market Operator (NEMO) for the Republic of North Macedonia for the next four years.
A Nominated Electricity Market Operator (NEMO) is a designated operator of the organized electricity market that, under EU regulations, participates in coupling with the single European electricity market.
The legal basis for this decision is contained in the new Energy Law, which is aligned with European legislation and received support from the Energy Community Secretariat even during its draft phase. This is a strong confirmation of our country’s commitment to European energy standards and integration into the EU common electricity market. The Government made this decision following the prior opinion and proposal for adoption by the Energy Regulatory Commission.
This marks a significant step forward in the country’s energy sector development and is a recognition of MEMO’s commitment to managing the organized electricity market transparently and efficiently, in line with European rules and practices.
The CEO of MEMO, Zoran Gjorgjievski, stated that the granting of NEMO status is a recognition of the efforts invested so far and a confirmation of the vision of having a functional Macedonian organized electricity market and its integration into the single European market.
“This progress is a joint success of all stakeholders in the energy sector – the Ministry of Energy, the Government, and our partners at the regional and European level – and represents a significant step toward the integration of the Macedonian electricity market with the European one through the so-called market coupling mechanism. The successful operation of the Macedonian power exchange in the recent period, thanks to the trust that market participants place in us daily, is yet another confirmation of our continued commitment to realizing this strategic goal,” emphasized Gjorgjievski.
Specifically, MEMO’s appointment as NEMO opens up numerous opportunities:
Market Coupling: Connecting the Macedonian organized electricity market with the markets of EU member states, in our case with Greece or Bulgaria, i.e., integrating the domestic organized market into the single European market in the day-ahead and intraday segments.
Greater liquidity, transparency, and efficiency: Improving market transparency, increasing efficiency, and making significant progress in strengthening the security of electricity supply in Macedonia. This includes optimal allocation of available cross-border capacities, as well as more efficient integration of renewable energy sources into the market, all based on transparent and non-discriminatory market principles.
Regulatory alignment: Ensuring compliance with European energy regulations and standards, which helps strengthen trust among market participants.
