23 September 2026, Skopje<\/strong> \u2013 Representatives of the National Electricity Market Operator, MEMO LLC, are participating in the 5th Annual Solar Conference, which is being held in Skopje on 23 and 24 September 2026, organized by Solar Macedonia, the Macedonian Solar Energy Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources, Sanja Bozinovska, officially opened the conference and spoke about the key projects being undertaken by the Ministry, which are of strategic importance to the country in the field of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the conference, Mitko Ognenoski, Organized Energy Market Manager, <\/strong>is participating as a panelist in the session dedicated to the future development of the solar sector and the electricity market in North Macedonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his address, Ognenoski emphasized that the Macedonian electricity market is entering a more mature stage of development, as evidenced by growing liquidity, increased activity among market participants, transparent price formation, and the development of new market segments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, we have an organized day-ahead market where electricity prices are formed transparently, while trading volumes and the number of active participants continue to grow. The market is playing an increasingly important role in business and investment decision-making, which is a clear signal of its growth,\u201d Ognenoski said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As an indicator of increased activity, he noted that in June 2026, a total of 137,172.4 MWh<\/strong> of electricity was traded on the day-ahead market, at an average price of \u20ac93.74\/MWh<\/strong>, or an average of 4,572.4 MWh per day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organized market is also gradually gaining greater depth through the development of additional market segments, enabling participants to manage their positions more actively closer to the time of delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom MEMO\u2019s perspective, the market is not merely a place where transactions are concluded. It is becoming an increasingly important mechanism for establishing a reference price, managing risk, and making business and investment decisions,\u201d Ognenoski noted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the signals that the market sends to investors in renewable energy sources, he emphasized that the value of electricity produced increasingly depends not only on the quantity generated, but also on the timing of production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMarket signals are becoming increasingly precise, enabling investors to better structure their investments. It is becoming increasingly important to look not only at the average price, but also at its hourly profile and the actual value of energy during the hours in which it is produced,\u201d Ognenoski said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As an illustration, he referred to June 2026, when 2,869.5 MWh<\/strong> of electricity was traded between 09:00 and 20:00<\/strong>, at an average price of \u20ac60.1\/MWh<\/strong>, significantly lower than the monthly average price of \u20ac93.74\/MWh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis should not be viewed merely as a price difference, but as a clear market signal that enables investors to better plan their investments based on actual market data,\u201d Ognenoski emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the growth of solar capacity is bringing new dynamics to the market. During hours of high solar generation, electricity supply increases, creating competitive pressure on prices, while during periods when solar generation declines, price signals can be significantly different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This increases the need for more advanced forecasting, energy storage, and active portfolio management, while at the same time creating opportunities for new business models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFuture projects will be developed as a combination of generation, energy storage, long-term contracts, high-quality forecasting, and active portfolio management. Producers are becoming active market participants who manage the timing of sales and the value of the energy they produce,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the impact of the increasing share of solar energy, Ognenoski emphasized that the growth of solar capacity creates opportunities for the development of modern trading models and greater flexibility of the electricity system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are gradually moving from the \u2018produce and sell\u2019 model towards the \u2018forecast \u2013 optimize \u2013 store \u2013 trade\u2019 model. More solar energy means more competition, more market signals, and greater opportunities for the development of new business models,\u201d Ognenoski said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

From MEMO\u2019s perspective, the next significant step in the development of the domestic electricity market will be its coupling and integration with the single European electricity market<\/strong>, which will contribute to greater efficiency, liquidity, and competitiveness of the electricity sector.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
